Paracetamol overdose causes around 1.5% of all A&E attendances and approximately 10% of A&E workload. Medtechtomarket are developing a low-cost rapid diagnostic test for diagnosing and stratifying patient risk with just a finger stick blood sample.
Paracetamol overdose causes around 1.5% of all A&E attendances approximately 10% of the emergency department workload. Unless reversed, it is extremely toxic to the liver and can be lethal. In the UK, there were nearly 220,000 overdose admissions to A&E in 2018 and this was a 20% increase over the previous year. It accounts for 75% of patients referred to the liver units with acute liver failure. This situation is expected to get worse, as the COVID-19 lockdown has already caused nearly a 50% increase in deliberate Paracetamol self-poisoning. Medtechtomarket are developing a highly sensitive, simple and low cost diagnostic test for both paracetamol and liver damage with just a finger stick blood sample.
