150 innovators and stakeholders attend the SBRI Healthcare and AI in Health and Care Awards Annual conference

The SBRI Healthcare and AI in Health and Care Awards Annual conference was held on 24 April 2023 at the Francis Crick Institute, London.

150 innovators and NHS stakeholders joined to share advice, inspire success and build new connections. All with the aim to develop and scale impactful health and social care innovations for patient benefit.

Lord Markham CBE, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care gave the keynote address followed by pitches and top tips from Dr Bea Bakshi, Co-founder and CEO of C the Signs, Dr Debbie Wake, CEO of MyWay Digital Health and Dr Nick de Pennington, Founder and CEO of Ufonia.

Matt Whitty, CEO of the AAC introduced the work of the Accelerated Access Collaborative before a session on innovating for Net zero healthcare chaired by Natalia Kurek, Deputy Director, Greener NHS at NHS England, with speakers Ben Tongue, Net Zero Digital Lead at NHS England, Alex Hammond, Head of Sustainable Procurement and Supply Chain at NHS England, Graham Simmonds, Chief Executive at Team Jump, and Piyush Mahapatra, Director of Innovation at Open Medical.

In the afternoon there was a session on NHS Spread and Adoption chaired by Dr Neville Young, Director of Enterprise & Innovation at Yorkshire and Humber AHSN with Mike Long, Lead Analyst at Unity Insights, Charlene Tang, Head of Growth at Cyted, Nigel Sansom, Executive Chairman of Pinpoint, Riaz Rahman, VP Healthcare Global at Brainomix, Dr. Paul Bhogal from The Royal London Hospital, Lauren Fensome, Clinical Innovation Adoption Programme Manager at the Oxford AHSN and Dominic Cushnan, Director of AI, Imaging & Deployment at the NHS AI Lab.

The session was followed by workshop 1 on healthTechh regulations, standards and framework chaired by Dr Ian Newington, Assistant Director, Innovation Programmes at LGC Group with Phil Brown, Director, Regulatory & Compliance at ABHI, Richard Parker, Legal Director at Hill Dickinson (future of data protection and AI regulation), David Grimsey, Director of Corporate Strategy at Element and Dr Nathan Moore, Founder and Director of Primum Digital.

Workshop 2 focused on access to finance and scaling up chaired by Louise Jopling, Commercial Director at the Eastern AHSN with Nelli Morgulchik, Venture Development Associate at Pioneer Group, Lisa Thomas, Venture Development Partner at Pioneer Group, James Paton-Philip, Partner at Hill Dickinson, Tobias Alpsten, CEO of iPlato and David Rawaf, Clinical Excellence Lead at Inovus.

Concluding remarks were given by Dan Bamford, Deputy Director for Medtech and Digital, Innovation, Research and Life Sciences Team at NHS England.

The event was also a chance for innovators to meet SBRI Healthcare partners on their stands, including KQ Labs, Unity Insights, ABHI, Hill Dickinson LLP, the Accelerated Access Collaborative, The AHSN Network, NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, and the NHS Innovation Accelerator.
